Or have your agency fund it. Every federal employee can request training through the SF-182 (Authorization, Agreement and Certification of Training) or an agency purchase card. Certification is mandatory for anyone in the DE process — which makes this one of the easiest training justifications you’ll ever write.

OPM’s assessment fee is $365 per attempt (in-person only, per OPM pricing effective Oct 1, 2025), and OPM cited a roughly 40% failure rate in its FY 2023 Annual Performance Report. OPM’s instructor-led DE training runs $1,140 per seat.
DE Complete is $139 — less than half the cost of a single retake, and about 12% of the instructor-led alternative.
